Day 6 Watson Lake to Whitehorse

Wednesday, June 12

Today should be an easy day with only 275 miles to Whitehorse. Frank finally got the good news from the RCMP that his authorization to transport his 38 Special was granted an extension until Friday. This will give us time to make it to the Alaska border crossing without having to worry about getting the gun confiscated.

The Yukon Territory looks much like British Columbia with vast expanses of thick forested areas.

In many places, the pine trees look like they have been in a forest fire, except that they have all their branches and needles. We learned that this was caused by an infestation of pine beetles that have decimated thousands of acres of forest.

We did not see any wildlife today, so here are a couple of pictures that we did not get to post yesterday. Sauntering along the edge of the highway was a sow and three cubs. Two of them were frollicking up and down the trees while the third one was somewhere in the forest.Always on the alert, Mama bear was keeping a keen eye on them.

And there was always a great view of the majesty of Mother Nature.

Snack time on the highway

This is the only moose we saw today

Young man cycling from Anchorage to South America

Despite the good road conditions we have seen, there is an occasional patch-up job where they dig up the old surface, throw down some tar, cover it with gravel, and let the traffic pound it into the ground and eventually blow off all the excess gravel. The big trucks passing in the opposite direction seem to have a grudge against us RVers, as they put out a tremendous dust storm and throw gravel at your windshield. So far, I only have one small rock chip.

The largest stern wheeler to ply the Yukon River

All hooked up at Pioneer Village RV Park. the layout is wonderful, however, driving our RV's through the narrow gravel lane was quite challenging. We had to back up and make two attempts to get around some of the turns.

Tomorrow, we hope to cross the YT/Alaska border and be back in the good ole USA!
